The Elk River is one of The Mountain State’s longest rivers. Forming at the confluence of
mountain streams along the Allegheny Range in
the eastern part of the state, it flows over 170
miles to the states capitol in Charleston. The Elk is
known to disappear underground near Slatyfork,
